The hada is a tight and visible ko-itame that has been expertly crafted. The blade is mumei , or unsigned, but shows a stamp. Based on the shape, workmanship, and age, the sword looks to be an early murata-to , or one of the famous experimental swords developed by the Japanese general Murata Tsuneyoshi. The mountings are Russo-Japanese period Naval Kyu Gunto with a high quality same rayskin saya.
The mountings are in outstanding and pristine MINTY condition. The tsuka is saber-shaped and in MINTY condition. All of the wire wraps are present around a customized rayskin core. The tsuka shows a nice and healthy patina. The tsuka is also decorated with a family mon of hanabashi, or a flowery diamond, used by clans such as the Yanagisawa.
The saya shows very few areas of missing finish, retaining roughly 98-99% original finish. There is a locking mechanism and it works perfectly. The blade is in Near MINT condition.
It shows no nicks, a few small spots of light scattered rust, and few scratches along the blade. There are no major flaws like hagire. Given the rarity of Naval Kyu Guntos and the ultra-high quality condition of this one, I highly recommend this piece for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords. This item is original and not a knockoff or fake.
